We love about 70% of our apartment. We love the ceilings, the room, the storage, and what we have made of it. We HATE (well mostly me but David agrees because he doesn't like it when I complain) the furnace and the washer/dryer in the basement.
Furnace--
We have it set at 68 degrees on auto heater and the apartment rarely gets above 66. Most of the time it lingers around 65. You would think that setting at 68 would make it pretty efficient for a low gas bill right? WRONG! I opened our gas bill today-- $80 for a freezing apartment!! I am fuming! Totally not cool. We even asked the land lord to come in last month when the gas bill was $60. He came in and apparently did nothing. Our hallway is significantly warmer than our apartment.
Washer/dryer--
First of all David hates basements ever since he was a kid so I don't require him to go down there very often. Second, I hate that we have to pay for lousy old washers and driers. Well, when we can we use friends and family's washers and dryers to avoid the basement but we usually have to do about 1 wash a week down there. I was getting really frustrated with the dryers because they weren't working well enough. A few weeks later I saw an out of order sign... could they not have put it on earlier so I didn't waste my precious quarters?? And then-- here's the kicker-- they put in new dryers that are twice the cost and don't dry twice as fast. Now I have to find out how many quarters it takes to dry a load which will probably end up being around 7, that means its almost $3 just for one simple complete load. You gotta be kidding me!!
I really do not want to move, it is such a hassle especially if we'll probably just be moving again in a year and a half. Ugh!!
Thank you for reading or not reading my rant. I think we will resort to space heaters now instead of my other option of having a David and landlord throw-down. I think we all know what the result of that would be :)

I totally understand your frustration. Be a voice of reason with the landlord. Let them know or check with the housing board what the standards are for the washroom downstairs and the cold walls. They might not be up to code and need some attention. Love ya, Mom
That stinks about the heater. We have no washer or dryer in our new place and have to travel to a laundromat to clean our clothes now. So your old basement washer and dryer actually make me a little jealous believe it or not. At least you don't have to go to a laundromat.
