Happy 1 year!

I can't believe it has already been a year, its been awesome!

We decided to go out on Saturday night since our anniversary was on the 8th (Sunday and mother's day).  I had been given a gift certificate at work to a nice restaurant so we decided to go there and get some good grub.  We went to the New Yorker in downtown SLC.  Our reservation was at 6pm on a Saturday night, apparently I wasn't aware that is considered an early time for dinner because we were there with a bunch of "old" couples there, it was funny!

Here is what we ate:
Coconut crab cake with mango salsa

I think he likes it

Slow roasted tomatoes with mozzarella and avocados topped with pine nuts, capers and a balsamic vinaigrette

David presenting the food (note his hand)

Pappardelle with Main Lobster

cheesy smile and short hair!

Chicken Picatta with whipped potatoes and asparagus

This was creme brulee... it was just so good we forgot to take a picture before we dug in.

That morning our oven's element burned out so it has been out of commission since then.  We didn't get to make a dinner for our anniversary so the bishop's wife told me I could bake our cake at her house and she kept us over for dinner.  What an eventful weekend!

Here is to an eternity more of amazing years together

Patience is my weakness

I have been day dreaming a lot recently of what my future could hold.  I am SO impatient right now.  All I want is to be in a more stable situation with kiddos running around, a house with a backyard and what seems like simple amenities, and a little comfort.  I realize it will probably be YEARS before I can have most or all of these.

I would LOVE one of these in our house... especially so David can fit in it and actually get his legs submerged enough for him to relax:
A large tub!

I would also love a full size dishwasher, a washer and dryer, and a stove top that doesn't lean.

I think we all know how much I want one of these:
There is planning in progress for this... yes!!
I would also love one of these:
backyard
So we can have one of these:
doberman pinscher
(Yes, I am warming up to the idea of having a dog)

We are also saving up for one of these:
Or this one (depending on who gives us the better deal when we're ready to buy):

Wow, I am realizing I have a lot of wants!

Don't get the idea that I am not super grateful for the life I have now.  David and I get the chance to grow together and do a lot of learning that would not be available if we didn't have to set goals to eventually achieve the above wants/needs.  I wouldn't trade this time for anything, but I do have my days and moments that I am impatient to stretch my arms and grow.  Today is just one of those days.

Trithlon!!

About a month ago my sister suggested we do a triathlon together before her family moves to Southern California.  Yesterday was the day and it was great!

Here is the before:
The order was run, bike, swim.  I thought that order was awesome, get the hardest legs (for me) finished first.

Here are Kirstin and I on the run
It was a team effort!
Here is the run to bike transition
And the bike mounting
They gave us this goo stuff for energy... it was nasty!
I only had a small amount before I realized how bad it was
And off we go!
Luckily one of the girls in my ward is a biker and she was generous to let me borrow her bike for the race.  It was so fast!  I had to practice though because I don't own a bike and her gear shifters were down by the water bottle.  Great bike though, it was so fun.

When David saw me coming in on my bike he was so happy.  He was worried I would fall off somewhere and scrape my face because last time he saw me on the bike I was pretty wobbly.  And if you expand the picture you can see how the helmet didn't fit.  At least I'm smiling!

Yay for Kirstin coming in!
She let me take off at my own pace which is why we didn't come in together
And here we are after finishing

I reached my goal: I was the fastest swimmer in my age group!  Woop woop
*Update*-- I just looked at all the times and I was the fastest female swimmer in the whole triathlon... heck yeah baby!

Then we came back home after and I was tending to a very sick husband.  What a weekend!

Congrats to everyone!

It is becoming more and more real to me recently that I am now in the phase where just about everyone around is in mommy phase.  Pretty sure in the last week I've found out that maybe 3 new people are pregnant.  That is pretty standard too.  I have to laugh a little because this is increasingly becoming the norm and if I don't laugh I'll go crazy waiting for my time.

So congrats to everyone!!  Hopefully in a few months I'll be joining the bun in the oven party!

Hey, a girl can dream, right?

Only 1 more year of Utah

Its days like these when I wished I was as strong as David is at blocking people out.  And I don't mean on the court.

The University of Utah just hired a new basketball coach to replace David's last coach.  I really hope the best for him and for the team.  I read the news report on Deseret News and went to the comment board to hopefully see some supportive comments.  Well, I was entirely wrong.  It was drenched in negativity and demeaning laughter coming from their biggest rival... BYU.  Now I understand that those that comment may only be a very small percentage of their population, but there they are hoping for the worst for Davids team and laughing at the shortcomings that the team has had in recent years.

I have family and friends that I dearly love that go or have gone to BYU that would never say those sort of things about anyone, even their arch-rival.  I also have some friends and family that definitely would say those sorts of things only to their arch-rival.  To the aforementioned, I'm sorry you have to associate with such negative individuals.  Reading those posts made me want to leave the state so bad because I'm disappointed to be around such hypocritical people.  I understand that there are the same kind of people at the U of U but come on, do you really want that to be your excuse as to why you can make these sort of comments?

I don't see this sort of situation clearing up anytime soon, it comes with sports especially when people take things personally.  Like apparently what I am doing this morning.  Its funny how the athletes are the ones that probably care the least about the rivalry.  I wish I could block out the critics like they do.

At this point I just need to learn to block it all out.  The individuals who comment are not worth my time and emotions.  I guess I was just expecting more of the state of Utah, but it just shows that we are human and thus make mistakes.

Hopefully I can cheer up and focus the rest of the day!

Opinion Post

Every morning since David's coach was released I've been checking the local newspapers to see if they have any news on the situation.  Sometimes I feel like they get the news first before David can tell me anything.  Well, this morning I came upon this story.

My first thoughts were "He is unAmerican", "His parents probably paid for his education anyway", "He is jealous of athletes", etc.  Honestly, I don't think his idea would ever happen.  There are countless athletes that are first in their family to go to college because of athletic scholarships.  Yes, some don't take advantage of the schooling they are given but some really do.  It enables them to make something of their lives.

I understand that people may think that college athletes are up there with professional athletes because they are "given" a chance to have an easy life in school without having to pay for it.  While I do agree that it is very nice that they don't have to worry over tuition expenses, it could be argued that they have a much different college experience than those that are not tied to the university by that scholarship with the athletic department basically owning their life for 4 years (unless of course they leave early for pro).

I am not going to list off all the benefits and drawbacks of being a college athlete.  The lists would probably be long and about equal length.  I do however wish to voice my opinion on the matter in the complete opposite direction of Nader's.  David's scholarship is very helpful in covering some of our monthly expenses, but I stress the word some.  You see athletes breaking NCAA rules trying to make some extra cash here and there and while they are pretty stupid for breaking clear rules, I understand why they do that.

In our situation we are given a monthly stipend which is supposed to cover rent and food expenses.  It covers our rent exactly and that is all.  While that is our largest expense each month, we go through times (like this month) where we are looking around the house at things we can possibly sell to have a little extra for groceries or gas.  We cannot consider anything that is given to David by the school because it is technically still school property.  David has countless amounts of shoes, I wouldn't mind clearing some out just for extra room.  If I didn't have a job we would be starving, in a sense.  I feel for those honest athletes that may not have parents or family that can support them outside of the scholarship.  I don't know how they support themselves.  There is absolutely no time outside of school and sports to get a job, the off-season is their only chance to make money.

It is nice to never have to worry about school loans or payments for David, but that is not really an immediate perk of a scholarship.  That is paid off in the future by having a good degree that was earned by David because he is a great student and takes advantage of the help he is given.  Many student-athletes out there need immediate help with day-to-day expenses that a scholarship doesn't cover.

One comment David made after his coach was let go is a great addition to this opinion.  He roughly said, "this has become less about the athletes and more of a business."  I think that is spot on.  NCAA officials (by this I do not mean refs), coaches, athletic directors make more than enough to support their families and then some while athletes have to be careful about every little decision they make to try to support themselves.  Only a very small fraction of student-athletes progress on to a professional athlete status, the others hopefully used their academic experience and networking to get them into a field to give them a bright future outside of athletics.

It would be nice if the stipend was increased on a need-based system. That is roughly the point I am getting at.

That was my rather large thought this morning.  What do you think of this subject?
